ABSTRACT The use of antibiotic prophylaxis in the extraction of third molars is extremely controversial, raising several discussions about the most appropriate clinical protocol to avoid postoperative complications. To review the literature on the subject, describing the evidence for and against antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent surgical site infections in third molar extractions, besides establishing a prophylactic protocol and dosage regimen. A literature review was carried out analyzing scientific evidence from articles on the PubMed and Scielo platforms by searching for the descriptors “antibiotic therapy and infection in third molar extraction surgery”, “antimicrobial prophylaxis and infective endocarditis”, “antibiotic prophylaxis and adverse effects”, “antibiotic therapy in dentistry”, “surgical time and incidence of infections in extractions”, including original articles and double or triple blind randomized clinical trials, in Portuguese and English, published between 1980 and 2021, separated in chronological order. There is no consensus in the literature on the indication of antimicrobial prophylaxis, but factors as surgeon’s skill, time elapsed during the procedure and the patient’s general health status directly affect the incidence and severity of infections. Among all the literature analyzed for this study, it is possible to infer that the topic is still extremely questionable and, therefore, it is essential to conduct new experimental studies to obtain more conclusive data on the subject.

RESUMO O emprego da profilaxia antibiótica na exodontia de terceiros molares é extremamente controverso, gerando diversas discussões sobre o protocolo clínico mais adequado para evitar as complicações pós-operatórias. Revisar a literatura referente ao tema, descrevendo as evidências a favor e contra a profilaxia antibiótica para prevenir infecções do sítio cirúrgico nas extrações de terceiros molares, além de firmar um protocolo profilático e regime posológico. Realizou-se uma revisão de literatura analisando evidências científicas através de artigos nas plataformas PubMed e Scielo pela pesquisa de descritores “antibioticoterapia e infecção em cirurgia de extração de terceiros molares”, “profilaxia antimicrobiana e endocardite infecciosa”, “profilaxia antibiótica e efeitos adversos”, “antibioticoterapia em odontologia”, “tempo cirúrgico e incidência de infecções em exodontias”, sendo incluídos artigos originais e ensaios clínicos duplos ou triplos cegos randomizados, nos idiomas português e inglês, publicados entre 1980 e 2021, separados em ordem cronológica. Não há consenso na literatura sobre a indicação da profilaxia antimicrobiana, porém há fatores como a habilidade do cirurgião, tempo decorrido durante o procedimento e estado de saúde geral do paciente afetam diretamente na incidência e severidade das infecções. Dentre toda a literatura analisada para este estudo, é possível aferir que o tema é ainda extremamente questionável e, portanto, é fundamental que novos estudos de caráter experimental sejam feitos para que se obtenha dados mais contundentes sobre o assunto.

Abstract The thermal dynamics of the upper atmosphere, especially in the mesosphere, have been improving our understanding about the effects of climate change, as well as how the dynamics and general circulation in the upper atmosphere are driven by different types of waves, such as the atmospheric gravity waves, planetary waves and atmospheric tides. In order to study the upper atmospheric temperature variability and gravity waves, several research groups have been employing the remote technique of observing the airglow emissions originated in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere, besides emissions from the ionosphere. INPE’s airglow group started the studies on emissions from the upper atmosphere to investigate temperature and dynamics in the mesosphere, thermosphere/ionosphere at the end of 70’s. However, only in 2001 this group sent the first airglow experiment to the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF) to measure the OH (8-3) emission and temperature. From that year to 2014, several other experiments were carried out at EACF, not only to measure the temperature and airglow intensities, but also to observe gravity waves, winds and other related phenomena. This paper presents airglow experiments at EACF from 2001 to the present, including illustrations, examples of already published results, and unpublished data.

RESUMO Introdução: Simulações são amplamente utilizadas na educação médica, mas há pouca evidência de sua eficácia no tratamento de pacientes neurocríticos. Como o acidente vascular cerebral agudo (AVC) é uma patologia que requer atendimento imediato, o uso de simulação pode ser uma ferramenta útil no treinamento do manejo desses pacientes. Objetivo: Avaliar o impacto do uso de simulação realística na autopercepção de segurança no atendimento a pacientes vítimas de AVC agudo. Métodos: Estudo antes-depois controlado. No grupo da intervenção, 17 profissionais da área de saúde participaram de um curso de simulação realística de atendimento a pacientes com AVC. Como controles, os participantes foram escolhidos a partir de uma amostra de conveniência composta por 18 participantes do curso Emergency Neurologic Life Support (ENLS) e 20 participantes de um curso de Neurossonologia. Foram respondidos questionários antes e após o curso para avaliar a autopercepção de segurança no atendimento a pacientes vítimas de AVC agudo, variando de 10 a 50 pontos. Foi avaliada a variação entre os resultados pré- e pós-teste, para avaliar a mudança na autopercepção de confiança do trainee no manejo do AVC agudo. Análise multivariada foi realizada para controlar possíveis fatores de confusão. Resultados: Quarenta e seis (83,63%) participantes responderam aos questionários. A pontuação no questionário pós-curso foi maior do que a obtida no questionário pré-curso no grupo de participantes do curso de simulação realística em AVC [mediana do questionário pré-curso: 41,5 (36,7-46,5) e mediana do questionário pós-curso: 47,0 (44,7-48,0); p=0,033]. Essa diferença não foi observada no curso de Neurossonologia [mediana pré-curso (IQR): 46,0 (44,0-47,00), mediana pós-curso (IQR): 46,0 (44,0-47,0); p=0,739] nem no ENLS [mediana pré-curso (IQR): 46,5 (39,0-48,2) mediana pós-curso (IQR): 47,0 (40,2-49,0); p=0,317]. Esses resultados persistiram após ajuste das variáveis. Conclusão: O curso de simulação realística em AVC foi associado a um aumento na autopercepção de segurança dos participantes em atender pacientes vítimas de AVC agudo.

ABSTRACT Background: Simulations are becoming widely used in medical education, but there is little evidence of their effectiveness on neurocritical care. Because acute stroke is a neurological emergency demanding prompt attention, it is a promising candidate for simulation training. Objective: To assess the impact of a stroke realistic simulation course on clinicians’ self-perception of confidence in the management of acute stroke. Methods: We conducted a controlled, before-after study. For our intervention, 17 healthcare professionals participated in a stroke realistic simulation course. As controls, participants were chosen from a convenience sample of attendees to the courses Emergency Neurologic Life Support (ENLS) (18 participants) and Neurosonology (20 participants). All participants responded pre- and post-test questionnaires evaluating their self-perception of confidence in acute stroke care, ranging from 10 to 50 points. We evaluated the variation between pre- and post-test results to assess the change on trainees’ self-perception of confidence in the management of acute stroke. Multivariate analysis was performed to control for potential confounders. Results: Forty-six (83.63%) subjects completed both questionnaires. The post-test scores were higher than those from the pretests in the stroke realistic simulation course group [pretest median (interquartile range - IQR): 41.5 (36.7-46.5) and post-test median (IQR): 47 (44.7-48); p=0.033], but not in the neurosonology [pretest median (IQR): 46 (44-47) and post-test median (IQR): 46 (44-47); p=0.739] or the ENLS [pretest median (IQR): 46.5 (39-48.2), post-test median (IQR): 47 (40.2-49); p=0.317] groups. Results were maintained after adjustment for covariates. Conclusions: This stroke realistic simulation course was associated with an improvement on trainees’ self-perception of confidence in providing acute stroke care.

OBJECTIVES: Positive fluid balance is frequent in critically ill patients and has been considered a potential biomarker for acute kidney injury (AKI). This study aimed to evaluate positive fluid balance as a biomarker for the early detection of AKI in critically ill patients. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study. The sample was composed of patients ≥18 years old who stayed ≥3 days in an intensive care unit. Fluid balance, urinary output and serum creatinine were assessed daily. AKI was diagnosed by the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome criteria. RESULTS: The final cohort was composed of 233 patients. AKI occurred in 92 patients (40%) after a median of 3 (2-6) days following ICU admission. When fluid balance was assessed as a continuous variable, a 100-ml increase in fluid balance was independently associated with a 4% increase in the odds of AKI (OR 1.04; 95% CI 1.01-1.08). Positive fluid balance categorized using different thresholds was always significantly associated with subsequent detection of AKI. The mixed effects model showed that increased fluid balance preceded AKI by 4 to 6 days. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that a positive fluid balance might be an early biomarker for AKI development in critically ill patients.

Os processos de transformação urbanos são dos fenómenos que mais atenção têm recebido nas ciências regionais ou urbanas. Mas a complexidade e diversidade destes processos, as suas múltiplas manifestações a diferentes escalas, têm desafiado a sua categorização e identificação. Este artigo contribui para esta problemática ao propor uma tipologia de transformações urbanas para Portugal Continental baseada em três dimensões - a urbanidade, a centralidade e a evolução da população. A urbanidade traduz o grau de urbanização de uma determinada área, considerando as suas características demográficas ou de uso do solo. A centralidade refere-se ao posicionamento no sistema urbano mais amplo, sendo aferida através de variáveis que expressam a sua hierarquia funcional. A evolução da população permite traduzir parte da dinâmica de transformação, obtendo-se pela diferença entre a população residente em diferentes períodos. O trabalho adota as freguesias como unidades territoriais de base, recorrendo a técnicas clássicas (de redução de variáveis e de identificação de clusters) por forma a identificar a associação das diferentes unidades territoriais a processos de transformação urbana reconhecidos na literatura.

Urban transformations are some of most frequently studied phenomena in regional and urban sciences. But the complexity and diversity of these processes, and their manifestations at different scales, have challenged their classification and identification. This article contributes to this subject by proposing a typology of urban transformations for mainland Portugal based on three dimensions - urbanity, centrality, and population growth. Urbanity refers to the degree of urbanization of a given area, considering population density and land use variables. Centrality refers to the position of an area in the broader urban system and is assessed through variables that express its functional hierarchy. Population growth is assessed by the change of resident population from one period to the another. This study is based on applying methods for dimensionality reduction (principal component analysis) and cluster analysis to geographic data, making it possible to associate different territorial units (parishes) with urban transformation processes.

RESUMO Objetivo: Revisar sistematicamente a evidência atual da eficácia de milrinona no tratamento do vasoespasmo cerebral após hemorragia subaracnóidea. Métodos: Triaram-se as bases de dados Pubmed®, Cochrane e Embase quanto a artigos publicados entre abril de 2001 e fevereiro de 2019. Dois revisores independentes realizaram uma triagem metodológica da qualidade e a extração dos dados dos estudos. Resultados: Encontraram-se 22 estudos considerados relevantes, sendo que apenas um deles era um ensaio randomizado controlado. Os estudos demonstraram acentuada heterogeneidade e debilidade de seus critérios metodológicos. A maioria dos pacientes apresentava vasoespasmo moderado a grave. O principal método para diagnóstico do vasoespasmo foi a angiografia. Em três estudos, realizou-se administração de milrinona por via intra-arterial; em nove estudos, a administração foi endovenosa, e, em seis estudos, utilizaram-se ambas as vias de administração. A via intratecal foi utilizada em dois estudos, em um estudo, a administração foi realizada via cisterna e, em um estudo, a via de administração foi a endovascular. Os efeitos colaterais de milrinona foram descritos em seis estudos. Vinte e um estudos indicaram a resolução do vasoespasmo. Conclusão: A evidência atual indica que o uso de milrinona teve um papel no tratamento do vasoespasmo após hemorragia subaracnóidea aneurismática. Contudo, só foi realizado um ensaio randomizado controlado, com baixo nível de qualidade. Nossos achados indicam a necessidade de futuros estudos randomizados controlados com desfechos centrados no paciente, com o fim de proporcionar recomendações definitivas.

ABSTRACT Objective: To systematically review the current evidence on the efficacy of milrinone in the treatment of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage. Methods: The Pubmed®, Cochrane and Embase databases were screened for articles published from April 2001 to February 2019. Two independent reviewers performed the methodological quality screening and data extraction of the studies. Results: Twenty-two studies were found to be relevant, and only one of these was a randomized control trial. Studies showed marked heterogeneity and weaknesses in key methodological criteria. Most patients presented with moderate to severe vasospasm. Angiography was the main method of diagnosing vasospasm. Intra-arterial administration of milrinone was performed in three studies, intravenous administration was performed in nine studies, and both routes of administration in six studies; the intrathecal route was used in two studies, the cisternal route in one study and endovascular administration in one study. The side effects of milrinone were described in six studies. Twenty-one studies indicated resolution of vasospasm. Conclusion: The current evidence indicates that milrinone may have a role in treatment of vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. However, only one randomized control trial was performed, with a low quality level. Our findings indicate the need for future randomized control trials with patient-centered outcomes to provide definitive recommendations.

O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em avaliar o desempenho agronómico de cultivares e linhas superiores de feijão-caupi de porte semiprostrado no Norte de Minas Gerais. Foram avaliadas 16 linhas superiores e quatro cultivares de feijão-caupi de porte semiprostrado, nos anos de 2014 e 2015 (verão-outono).O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os genótipos foram avaliados quanto ao tipo de porte, acama, valor de cultivo, índice e rendimento de grãos.Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância conjunta, considerando os dois anos de cultivo. Houve efeito significativo dos genótipos para as variáveis tipo de porte das plantas (PP), valor de cultivo (VC) e rendimento de grãos (RG). Os anos de cultivo influenciaram significativamente o porte das plantas, a acama e o índice de grãos. A interação genótipo x ano influenciou significativamente as variáveis porte das plantas e rendimento de grão. Os genótipos MNC04-774F-90, MNC04-769F-26 e BRS Marataoã destacam-se dos restantes por apresentarem maiores rendimentos de grão e maiores valores de cultivo, nos dois anos avaliados. Verificou-se também que os valores de porte de plantas, acama e índice de grãos destes genótipos estão conforme o indicado no padrão comercial. Estes resultados indicam um bom potencial produtivo e possibilidade de adaptação ao cultivo nas condições do Norte de Minas Gerais.

This study evaluated the agronomic performance of cultivars and elite lines of semi-prostrate cowpea in the North of Minas Gerais. We analyzed 16 elite lines and four cultivars of semi-prostrate cowpea, in summer-autumn crops (2014 and 2015). The experimental design was in randomized blocks with four replications. The genotypes were evaluated for growth habitat, lodging, value of cultivation, index and seed yield. The data were submitted to individual and joint variance analysis involving two years. There was a significant effect of interaction genotype and year for the variables growth habit and seed yield. For the value of cultivation there was a significant effect only for genotypes. The variables lodging and grain index were significantly influenced for year. There were more lodging and grain index in the summer-autumn crop of 2015. All genotypes have adequate growth habit and characterized as semi-prostate or prostate. The MNC04-774F-90, MNC04-769F-26 and BRS Marataoã genotypes stand out amongst the other genotypes because they have higher seed yields and values of cultivation in the two evaluated years, which shows good productive potential and possibility of adaptation to cultivation in the North of the Minas Gerais.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos da implantação de um programa de cuidados paliativos no estabelecimento de ordens de não reanimar e na utilização da unidade de terapia intensiva em hospitalizações terminais. Método: Os dados de todos os pacientes que faleceram em um hospital terciário brasileiro, entre maio de 2014 e setembro de 2016, foram coletados de forma retrospectiva. Analisamos a frequência do estabelecimento de ordens de não reanimar e de admissões à unidade de terapia intensiva entre os casos de óbito hospitalar. Utilizou-se análise de séries temporais interrompidas para avaliar as diferenças, em termos de tendências de estabelecimento de ordens de não reanimar e de admissões à unidade de terapia intensiva antes (15 meses) e após (12 meses) a implantação do programa de cuidados paliativos. Resultados: Analisamos um total de 48.372 admissões ao hospital, dentre as quais 1.071 óbitos no hospital. Os óbitos foram precedidos de ordens de não reanimar em 276 (25,8%) casos e ocorreram admissões à unidade de terapia intensiva em 814 (76%) casos. O estabelecimento de ordens de não reanimar aumentou de 125 (20,4%) para 151 (33%) casos, na comparação entre os períodos antes e após a implantação do programa de cuidados paliativos (p < 0,001). Ocorreram admissões à unidade de terapia intensiva em 469 (76,5%) e 345 (75,3%) dos casos, respectivamente, nos períodos pré e após a implantação do programa de cuidados paliativos (p = 0,654). A análise de séries temporais confirmou tendência ao aumento do estabelecimento de ordens de não reanimar de 0,5% por mês antes da implantação para 2,9% ao mês após a implantação (p < 0,001), demonstrando-se tendência à diminuição de utilização da unidade de terapia intensiva, de uma tendência a aumento de 0,6% ao mês, antes da implantação do programa, para diminuição de -0,9% ao mês no período, após a implantação (p = 0,001). Conclusão: A implantação de um programa de cuidados paliativos se associou com tendência ao aumento no estabelecimento de ordens de não reanimar e à diminuição do uso da unidade de terapia intensiva durante hospitalizações terminais.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the effect of the implementation of a palliative care program on do-not-resuscitate orders and intensive care unit utilization during terminal hospitalizations. Methods: Data were retrospectively collected for all patients who died in a tertiary hospital in Brazil from May 2014 to September 2016. We analyzed the frequency of do-not-resuscitate orders and intensive care unit admissions among in-hospital deaths. Interrupted time series analyses were used to evaluate differences in trends of do-not-resuscitate orders and intensive care unit admissions before (17 months) and after (12 months) the implementation of a palliative care program. Results: We analyzed 48,372 hospital admissions and 1,071 in-hospital deaths. Deaths were preceded by do-not-resuscitate orders in 276 (25.8%) cases and admissions to the intensive care unit occurred in 814 (76%) cases. Do-not-resuscitate orders increased from 125 (20.4%) to 151 (33%) cases in the pre-implementation and post-implementation periods, respectively (p < 0.001). Intensive care unit admissions occurred in 469 (76.5%) and 345 (75.3%) cases in the pre-implementation and post-implementation periods, respectively (p = 0.654). Interrupted time series analyses confirmed a trend of increased do-not-resuscitate order registrations, from an increase of 0.5% per month pre-implementation to an increase of 2.9% per month post-implementation (p < 0.001), and demonstrated a trend of decreased intensive care unit utilization, from an increase of 0.6% per month pre-implementation to a decrease of -0.9% per month in the post-implementation period (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The implementation of a palliative care program was associated with a trend of increased registration of do-not-resuscitate orders and a trend of decreased intensive care unit utilization during terminal hospitalizations.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as características químicas, físicas e sensoriais dos frutos de banana (Musa spp.) cultivar Caipira e Pacovan Ken, resistentes à Sigatoka Negra (Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet), com e sem embalagem de polietileno de baixa densidade, associada à refrigeração durante o período de armazenamento pós-colheita. O experimento foi instalado em 2012, no delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema de parcelas subdivididas no tempo, tendo nas parcelas um fatorial 3 x 2 referente aos frutos sem embalagem e com embalagem de polietileno de 10 e 16 µm e duas cultivares Caipira e Pakovan Ken, e nas subparcelas as avaliações em intervalos de seis dias (0; 6; 12; 18 e 24) e dois dias (0; 2; 4; 6 e 8), para frutos armazenados nas temperaturas de 12; 15 e 25 ºC, respectivamente. As variáveis avaliadas foram: sólidos solúveis, acidez titulável, relação sólidos solúveis/ acidez titulável, potencial hidrogeniônico, açúcares solúveis totais, coloração do fruto e análise sensorial. A embalagem de polietileno associada à refrigeração manteve os frutos armazenados por 24 dias, mantendo as características pós-colheita adequadas ao consumo. A cultivar Pakovan Ken destacou-se quando comparada à Caipira, apresentando valores superiores nos atributos dos frutos avaliados.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate the chemical, physical and sensory characteristics of the Caipira and Pakovan Ken cultivars of the banana (Musa spp.), resistant to black Sigatoka (Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet), both with and without low-density polyethylene wrapping and together with refrigeration during the period of post-harvest storage. The experiment was carried out in 2012, in a randomised block design and an arrangement of lots split over time. A 3 x 2 factorial scheme was used for the lots, consisting of fruit with no wrapping and fruit wrapped in 10 and 16 µm polyethylene film, and two cultivars, Caipira and Pakovan Ken. The sub-lots consisted of evaluations made at intervals of six days (0, 6, 12, 18 and 24) and of two days (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8), for fruit stored at temperatures of 12, 15 and 25 ºC respectively. The following variables were evaluated: soluble solids, titratable acidity, ratio of soluble solids to titratable acidity, hydrogen potential, total soluble sugars, fruit colouration and sensory analysis. The polyethylene film together with the refrigeration enabled the fruit to be stored for 24 days, maintaining post-harvest characteristics suitable for consumption. The Pakovan Ken cultivar stood out when compared to the Caipira, with higher values for the fruit attributes under evaluation.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa tem como objetivos (i) examinar a influência dos antecedentes estratégicos e dos elementos que constituem o modelo de negócios em sua proposta de valor, e (ii) estimar a relação entre a proposta de valor e o desempenho dos e-business. A investigação tem como suporte teórico o framework Tecnológico, Organizacional e Ambiental (TOA), decorrente da Teoria de Difusão de Inovações (TDI), para os Antecedentes Estratégicos (IFINEDO, 2011), o Modelo de Negócios (OSTERWALDER; PIGNEUR; 2010; SOUZA; BATISTA, 2014) e a literatura sobre desempenho empresarial (RAMANUJAN; VENKATRAMAN, 1987). O modelo teórico-conceitual proposto foi testado em uma amostra de 252 observações, por meio da modelagem de equações estruturais. Os principais resultados indicam a influência parcial dos antecedentes estratégicos na proposta de valor, por meio dos construtos posicionamento da gestão, prontidão organizacional, vantagem relativa e pressão dos stakeholders. O modelo de negócios a influencia a proposta de valor, através dos construtos segmentação de mercado, relacionamento com o cliente, capacidades, parcerias e modelo de receitas. Este, por sua vez, influencia positivamente o desempenho das empresas de e-business.

ABSTRACT This article aims to examine the influence of the strategic background and of the business model elements on its value proposition, and to investigate the relationship between the value proposition and the performance of e-business. The research is supported theoretically by the Technological, Organizational and Environmental framework (TOE), derived from the Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT), for the Strategic Background (IFINEDO, 2011), by the Business Model theory (OSTERWALDER; PIGNEUR; 2010; SOUZA; BATISTA, 2014) and by the business performance literature (RAMANUJAN; VENKATRAMAN, 1987). We tested the proposed model with a sample of 252 observations, using the structural equation modeling. The main results indicate a partial influence of the strategic background in the value proposition through the constructs management positioning, organizational readiness, relative advantage and pressure from stakeholders. Relating to the business model, the constructs of market segmentation, customer relationships, capabilities, partnerships and revenue model influence the value proposition, which in turn affects positively the performance of e-business companies.

RESUMO Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, determinar o crescimento e o acúmulo de macronutrientes de duas cultivares de abacaxi submetido a diferentes concentrações de alumínio; para isto foi realizado um estudo com vasos de plástico contendo quatro litros de solução nutritiva e utilizado o delineamento em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 x 5 sendo duas cultivares de abacaxi (IAC Fantástico e Vitória) cinco concentrações de alumínio (0, 21,6; 43,2; 64,8 e 86,4 mg de Al planta-1) e quatro repetições. Foram avaliados o comprimento de raiz, a matéria seca da raiz, o talo e as folhas, diâmetro do talo, emissão de folhas, teor de clorofila e acúmulo de macronutrientes aos 60 dias após os tratamentos. A cv. Vitória apresentou decréscimo linear no teor de clorofila, matéria seca de raízes, comprimento da raiz e acúmulo de N, P, K, Ca e Mg, na maioria dos componentes da planta promovidos pelo aumento da concentração de Al na solução nutritiva. A cv. IAC Fantástico teve menor massa de matéria seca total, matéria seca do talo, diâmetro do talo e acúmulo de N, Ca e Mg; no entanto, as características avaliadas não foram influenciadas pelo aumento da concentração de Al indicando maior tolerância desta cultivar ao Al em solução nutritiva.

ABSTRACT The objective was to determine the growth and accumulation of macronutrients of two pineapple cultivars submitted to different concentrations of aluminum (Al). For this, a study was conducted in plastic pots containing 4 L of nutrient solution, in a randomized block design, in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme, corresponding to two pineapple cultivars (‘IAC Fantástico’ and ‘Vitória’) and five Al concentrations (0, 21.6, 43.2, 64.8 and 86.4 mg of Al plant-1), with four replicates. The following variables were evaluated: root length, dry matter of root, stem and leaf, stem diameter, number of leaves, chlorophyll content and accumulation of macronutrients at 60 days after treatment. The cv. ‘Vitória’ showed a linear decrease in chlorophyll content, root dry matter, root length and accumulation of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in most plant components promoted by the increase of Al concentration in the nutrient solution. The cv. ‘IAC Fantástico’ had lower total dry matter, stem dry matter, stem diameter and accumulation of N, Ca and Mg. However, the evaluated characteristics were not influenced by the increase of Al concentration, showing greater tolerance of this cultivar to Al in nutrient solution.

RESUMO Na pesquisa aqui relatada analisa-se o efeito sobre o desempenho organizacional das empresas têxteis brasileiras da interação entre capacidades estratégicas, tipos de estratégia, qualidade da formulação da estratégia e capacidade de implementação da estratégia. Do universo das empresas têxteis brasileiras, 211 questionários válidos retornaram. Um modelo conceitual foi proposto e testado por meio do uso do sistema de equações estruturais. Os resultados suportam as relações entre a estratégia de enfoque as capacidades de marketing e entre a estratégia de liderança de custos e as capacidades de gestão. Contudo, a relação entre as capacidades tecnológicas e a estratégia de diferenciação não foi significativa estatisticamente. Foi ainda observada uma inter-relação entre as estratégias genéricas de foco, liderança de custo e diferenciação, o que revela o uso de estratégias combinadas. Com respeito ao desempenho organizacional, foi identificado que a capacidade de gestão e a performance de mercado apresentam uma relação estatisticamente significativa com a performance financeira.

ABSTRACT This research analyses how the interaction between strategy capabilities, strategy types, strategy formulation quality and implementation capability affect organizational performance in Brazilian textiles companies. This article proposes and tests a conceptual framework, using a structural equation modeling of a set of 211 valid questionnaires on Brazilian textiles firms. The results support links between focus strategy and marketing capabilities, and between cost leadership strategy and management capabilities. However, the relationship between technologic capabilities and differentiation strategy was not statistically significant. The existence of an inter-relationship between generic strategies of focus, cost leadership and differentiation indicates the use of combined strategies. Concerning the firms' financial performance, the results show that management capability and market performance have a statistically significant relationship with financial performance.

RESUMEN En este estudio se analiza cómo la interacción entre las capacidades estratégicas, los tipos de estrategia, la calidad de la formulación de la estrategia y la capacidad de implementación de la estrategia afecta el desempeño organizacional de las compañías textiles brasileñas. Del conjunto de dichas empresas textiles, se han obtenido 211 cuestionarios válidos. Se ha propuesto un modelo conceptual que se ha puesto a prueba por medio del uso de sistemas de ecuaciones estructurales. Los resultados respaldan las relaciones entre la estrategia de enfoque y las capacidades de marketing, y entre la estrategia de liderazgo de costos y las capacidades de gestión. Sin embargo, la relación entre las capacidades tecnológicas y la estrategia de diferenciación no ha sido estadísticamente significativa. Asimismo, se ha observado una interrelación entre las estrategias genéricas de enfoque, el liderazgo de costo y la diferenciación, lo que revela la utilización de estrategias combinadas. Respecto al desempeño organizacional, se ha identificado que la capacidad de gestión y el desempeño en el mercado presentan una relación estadísticamente significativa con el desempeño financiero.

Nonhuman primates are considered as the natural hosts of Hepatitis A virus (HAV), as well as other pathogens, and can serve as natural sentinels to investigate epizootics and endemic diseases that are of public health importance. During this study, blood samples were collected from 112 Neotropical primates (NTPs) (Sapajus nigritus and S. cay, n = 75; Alouatta caraya, n = 37) trap-captured at the Paraná River basin, Brazil, located between the States of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul. Anti-HAV IgG antibodies were detected in 4.5% (5/112) of NTPs, specifically in 6.7% (5/75) of Sapajus spp. and 0% (0/37) of A. caraya. In addition, all samples were negative for the presence of IgM anti-HAV antibodies. These results suggest that free-ranging NTPs were exposed to HAV within the geographical regions evaluated.

In this study, we evaluated the combination between an electrochemical process, occurring in the dark, and a heterogeneous photocatalytic process for dye degradation, using the azo dye tartrazine as model of oxidizable substrate. TiO2 P25 and an Ag-doped TiO2 were used as photocatalysts in suspensions containing 50 mg L–1 of tartrazine. The best result, 74% of dye mineralization in 120 min of reaction, was obtained using TiO2 P25 as photocatalyst and a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in the electrochemical cell, a value 30% higher than the sum of the results obtained by heterogeneous photocatalysis (44%) and electrochemical oxidation (13%). The use of Ag-doped TiO2 did not result in significant improvement on tartrazine mineralization, due to the aggregation of these nanoparticles. Our results suggest that this process can be an alternative for a complete treatment (discoloration and mineralization) of tartrazine and most likely other azo dyes.
